![]() For hundreds of millions of young people around the world Avatar may well be their first immersive vision of what adventures await humanity in space. Will NASA Ignore it or embrace it? Its presence will be globally ubiquitous with versions simultaneously released in 160 languages (the Voyager interstellar message record only had 55). The sequel, “Avatar: The Way Of Water” will descend upon our world in December. In the 13 years since its release real science has shown the sheer immensity of possible planets in the universe – and how many of them could be habitable. These days you hear people at NASA – starting with the Administrator – talking about Astrobiology – searching for life elsewhere. Avatar portrayed the wonders of an alien biosphere on an extrasolar planet orbiting tha star in the system closest to Earth. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.Keith’s note: When “Avatar” first came out in 2009 NASA almost completely ignored it (see “ Avatar: A Stunning New World That NASA Continues to Ignore” from 2010 ). The Omega bracelet is in good condition with scratches and has some stretch. The main winding and setting crown is correct for the reference with a wide Omega logo. The yellow paint is present in the chronograph pushers while the red paint is absent in both pushers. The paint in both crowns on the nine o'clock side of the case is still present. The yellow hands have developed patina and look a bit textured under a loupe. The lume in the rest of the hands matches that of the dial well. Disponibilità immediata da un Seller con sede in Svizzera, Biel 113. The lume in the blue hour hand is slightly darker than the rest but reacts the same under UV inspection. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a pale yellow-light greenish color. The white numbers on the internal bezel remain crisp. The dial shows a very light and even patina. The case has scratches and some small nicks along the edges. ![]() The Flightmaster logo and writing is light but still visible on the caseback. The edges are nice and crisp and the case generally is full. The case is strong but has been re-brushed in the past. This Flightmaster is in overall great condition. Paint partially missing on chronograph pushers OLI collects data for visible, near infrared, and short wave infrared spectral bands as well as a panchromatic band. 1162 bracelet with 172 endlinks (approximate max wrist size 7.25in / 184mm) OLI is a push-broom sensor with a four-mirror telescope and 12-bit quantization. It's a bold piece, but, especially with its Omega bracelet, wears so well on the wrist. The combination of colors here give this watch a look like no other. Each chronograph pusher has both a red and yellow indicator as the reference 145.036 was offered with both red and yellow chronograph hands– our example is yellow. The blue crown at ten o'clock adjusts the blue airplane-shaped second time zone hand, and the crown with a black dot at 8:30 rotates the inner bezel. Both crowns on the nine o'clock side of the case show their original coloring which can easily be lost on vintage Flightmasters. We were drawn to the watch because of the sharp lines on the case and the patina to the dial and hands. The watch we have here today is in overall great, attractive condition. In much the same way the Speedmaster was favored by NASA, the Flightmaster was favored by ROSCOSMOS, the Soviet space agency. Similar to the Speedmaster, the Flightmaster has a spacefaring connection. This generation is referred to as the "911" and used a modified caliber 861 movement. Omega changed this from an AM/PM indicator to a continuously running seconds register. What makes the third generation of the Flightmaster different from the first one is the inclusion of a running subsidiary register at nine o’clock, similar to the second generation ref. ![]() Omega made four different variations of the Flightmaster during the production of the model, from 1969 to about 1977 three of these references would be made in steel with one in solid gold. 145.036, like the example we have here today. The third generation of Omega's Flightmaster hit the catalog in 1973 under the ref. The Flightmaster was there to aid as the horological answer to this explosion of technology. Shortly before the watch was released, commercial aviation opened up jet travel to the growing middle class. It was sold as a pure, innovative pilot’s watch with an independently adjustable second time-zone function and AM/PM indicator for pilots crossing the globe. Omega introduced the original Flightmaster ref. Why This Watch Matters At the intersection of funk and flight sits this Omega. ![]()
